How Ecksand automated its 3D production workflow

By Miguel Cortes · Published January 19, 2025

Overview

Ecksand is one of Canada’s leading luxury jewelers, known for ethical sourcing and meticulous craftsmanship. As the brand grew, so did the number of 3D models required per launch: often hundreds of near-identical variants across sizes, stone layouts and metal options.

The challenge was not creativity. It was capacity. The team needed more output and more consistency without growing headcount or giving up precision.

With Outlier3D, Ecksand replaced repetitive manual modeling with a standardized parametric workflow that generates production-ready variants in seconds, so designers spend more time on custom and high-detail work.

The problem

Variant growth was creating a production bottleneck and pushing the team toward hiring just to keep up.

Ecksand’s designers are exceptional at crafting fine jewelry. But more and more of their day went to production maintenance: rebuilding the same base designs across a growing matrix of variations. Hours went into tasks like:

  • Swapping gemstone shapes and carat sizes
  • Adjusting prongs or shank proportions
  • Recreating best-sellers for new sizes or stones

None of this work could be skipped. But it slowed launches, consumed senior design time and made it harder to take on custom requests.

The solution

A standardized parametric pipeline that automates repeatable work while keeping designers in control.

We worked with Ecksand to find where the repetition and rework came from. Together, we built custom parametric definitions in Outlier3D that generate variations automatically from a small set of approved inputs and rules. Instead of rebuilding geometry by hand, Ecksand’s team now:

  1. Chooses the size, stone layout or setting style
  2. Clicks generate
  3. Receives a production-ready model

The system handles the repeatable geometry and consistency in the background, while designers keep control of the final design intent.

The result

More throughput, consistent models and launches that scale without adding headcount.

  • Routine production modeling is automated
  • Launch capacity scales without hiring
  • Every output keeps the same dimensions and standards
  • Design time shifts to custom pieces and more detailed orders
  • Workflows are standardized, so production is more reliable and repeatable

With automation handling repeatable geometry and one standard governing every variation, Ecksand improved both speed and consistency without losing the craftsmanship its brand demands.
